It seems most fitting for a class about media and communications to first have the predictable yet indispensable exercise of self-presentation in a mediated environment. Obviously the manner of communication in cyberspace is starkly different from face-to-face interaction, with the loss of many symbolic cues--from body language to the rise and fall of voice pitch. But much are added as well--from the adoption of avatars to the narrative closure afforded by one's writing of a beginning, middle, and end. And in both types of communication, the challenge is to make a good first impression. What is frustrating--and exciting--of course is that we simply don't know just how our audience will react, respond, remember, reply. And, with the affordances of technology, also: comment, forward, poke, reject, block, digg, flame, spam.
However this site, and this class, is a site of hospitality. It is a site of learning and exchange. It aims to be a space premised not simply on reason and/or emotion, but on responsibility, Roger Silverstone's (2006) lofty requirement for a mediaspace. This homepage is home.
I am happy to welcome you to the website of Com100 Communication Seminar Section D. I wish that you treat this online space not simply as a supplement to our offline lectures but as a meaningful resource for learning, an active and vibrant space for discussion, and a shared experience with your fellow classmates and lecturer.
Kindly reply to this post and introduce yourself below so that we can get our discussions going. Aside from your name, of course, I'd especially like to know why you picked your course. Additionally, you have the option of answering any, or all, of the following questions:
1) name a favorite tv show or movie or book and state why it makes your list.
2) how much time do you spend on the media in a typical day? do you consider yourself a heavy, medium, light user? a fan/addict/junkie of a particular technology or program or artist? why? how?
3) how do other people respond when you tell them that you're a Comm major? any memorable stories?
Switching to a different medium, please bring a 5x7" index card with 2x2" ID photo on June 17, Tuesday. Please include: name, birth date, and contact information (cell phone and email address).
June 17, Tuesday is the first classroom lecture. Please be prepared with the Silverstone reading.

I am Elijah Justin Santiago Segovia. You can call me E.J. I am a very fun student...trust me, I am not boring at all! You just have to find my tickle spots. I chose AB Com because I am fond of public speaking and interaction. It may be the best thing in the world - to speak and express yourself to others. I believe that AB Com will help me develop the right attitudes and instruments in creating positive outlooks on speaking and relating with others.
1) Favorite tv show: The Amazing Race. I want adventure. I want to race around the world! I want to work around the world. Did you know I wanted to be a pilot before? Now you know! Favorite book: Tuesdays with Morrie. It's one of the only few books that made me cry! Yes, cry!
2) Internet! Thank God to whoever invented the worldwide web! It's the most amazing thing in this world! You get to connect to people around the globe at the touch of your mouse. I use the internet 24/7! So it's really an amazing thing!
3) They just tell me that the course suits me. Actually, whenever I talk to people and without me telling them my course, they just say, "Com major ka 'no?" With Com, you can do anything and everything in this world!
As was asked, I'm replying to this post. :) Like the Axe commercial said, first impressions last. I'm hoping to make a good one. I'm Robyn Alexi C. Villanueva and I adore my course choice. I believe it's perfect for me since I like interacting with people, and observing them, finding out how they tick. Also, advertising has always intrigued me. How does one learn to communicate well enough to sell ice to the proverbial polar bear?
1) name a favorite tv show or movie or book and state why it makes your list.
Star Trek: Voyager is my favorite television show. I've never been good at science but I've always been fascinated by it. Taking into consideration the fact that I love reading and writing fiction, it makes sense that I would love this science-fiction show. Also, the characters are nothing to scoff at. The unresolved sexual tension between the two leads appeals to me. I'm not one for goopy romance. I love watching for subtle cues and this fulfills that need. Innuendo, tones of voice, the quirk of an eyebrow, how they touch...it's all open to interpretation and I adore that. The line from the second episode Parallax is a good example. The captain is asked by her first officer: '"Would you have served under me?" He's referring to their ranks, if she would have played subordinate to him. Still, fans who watch that scene hear his flirty tone, and the line receives an all-new meaning. Scenes like that are why I adore the show.
2) how much time do you spend on the media in a typical day?
I estimate 16 hours. My breaks are spent online, on message boards. I watch television. I listen to the radio in the car. I see billboards. The only time I don't see media is when I'm asleep. And who knows if I dream about commercials?
do you consider yourself a heavy, medium, light user? Heavy. Very heavy.
a fan/addict/junkie of a particular technology or program or artist? Yes, the internet. Particularly instant messengers.
why? how?
It's interactive. I can toy with it. Receive instant gratification if I wish to be heard via instant messenger...
3) how do other people respond when you tell them that you're a Comm major? any memorable stories?
My mother, a doctor, has a low opinion of my course, believing I'll just end up working in a call center when I graduate. I'm striving against that judgment. Comm is a lot more than call centers.
I’m Nina Francisco. You guys can call me Nina coz that’s my only name. LOL. I guess there are two main reasons why I choose to study AB Communication. One, because I wanted to study in ADMU and two, I’ve always been passionate about writing. And since Journalism was only offered as a track in AB Com, I decided to put it as my first choice in the application form. So now, I’m a Comm major. YAY! Anyway, I don’t have any regrets about choosing this course. Especially since I have the best block in the world. GO A3! And other people taking up this major really widened my horizons. I’m not limiting myself into just writing anymore. I’ve become open to explore the world of advertising, media studies, production.
1.) Favorite show: Japan Video Topic & Arirang TV definitely claimed the top of my list. Through these shows, I’m able to learn so many things about Japan, South Korea & the rest of the world. XD need I say more?
Favorite movie: Artificial Intelligence. I absolutely love the storyline and Haley Joel Osment was just too adorable. And I cried like there was no tomorrow. XD
Favorite book: I have lots but I’ll mention only one. Life of Pi by Yann Martel. This book is really amusing and the metafiction thingy is just awesome. LOL
2.) I think I’m a medium user. I spend about three to four hours using the internet. I’m a big fan of Korean & Japanese music so I have a lot of fandoms. I’m part of online forums to keep myself updated with the activities of my favorite groups. XD I also write random blogs about random stuff. And I make graphics using PS. I don’t watch TV that much since we don’t have cable in our dorm. And my bookworm mode has decreased significantly. T_T
3.) Most people aren’t really surprised to find out I’m a Comm major. Maybe I look the part? XD No, maybe I’m just talkative. And I love to make new friends. But anyway, most of them think I’m either from Information Design [a course that I would take in my second life. Haha] or Comm.
Hi I’m Claire! My name rhymes with bear… that’s why some people call me Claire Bear! (Claire Louise R. Cua)
When I entered the Ateneo, I had no idea why I picked my course. I just thought I’d spare myself from the science courses UP Manila and UST offered. Besides, it’s also an escape route from my brother’s path. I seriously had no intention of following his La Sallian footsteps. But as my days as a COM student fleetingly passed by, I learned more about my course and eventually, I found it in my heart to love it. All the tracks under COM fit to who I want to become - a person who communicates efficiently. I may use ads, writing, shows… anything, as long as it’s not boring. You can call me crazy or even weird, but I’m definitely not boring.
1) I love the Saw series. Actually, I’m an avid fan of horror, so it’s actually hard to impress me with scenes of blood. For me, the first Saw movie was absolutely awesome, not because of its goriness, but because of its plot. It’s actually pretty witty when you think about it. Everything is perfectly analyzed and planned down to its tiniest detail, just like the way “destiny” exists. Fate, as some people believe, lie on their own hands, so if they’re going to die, it’s actually their choice. Nobody forced them to kill themselves. It’s just a matter of which weighs more, excruciating pain which may lead to death or death.
These movies give importance to life. Some people just throw it away by smoking, being suicidal, drinking too much… etc. There are many ways to kill yourself, but there are only a few ways to live.
2) Since media is everywhere, one could exposure to it 24/7. But, I guess mine is about 3-4 hours a day. It actually depends on my mood.
Medium User. I’m usually the type who goes online to explore the fun things the internet can offer. I have a wide range of likes, so what I search for depends on what I’m currently curious in. But, there are sites I never forget to visit, such as newgrounds, multiply and deviantart.
Nut case mode: There are days when I could not live without the internet. My brother once said, “Internet for my sister is like drugs.”
3) People really don’t know much about my course. Usually, they’ll say, “Oh, so, you’re going to be the next Korina Sanchez?” I usually correct them with their misconception about COM majors.
So far, I’m convincing my friends, who are not yet in college, to choose AB COM as their course. I’m usually successful in brainwashing them. Besides, I like to see the sparkle in their eyes. I know that they know that AB COM is one of the best courses there is.
Hello! I'm Julii Chyianna Lo a.k.a. Chyna. :) I have a very wide range of interests (books to video games, rock to classical music etc.) Sometimes my eyes are blue, gray, green, tourquiose etc. but my real eye color is dark brown-black. ^-^
1) Death Note. Okay, it's not really a TV show but it's an anime series (I really love anime hahaha ^-^) and I have it on my list because it is one of the most intellectually-stimulating and exciting shows I've ever seen. A battle between the world's greatest detective and a supposed "God of The New World" (who is actually a genius teenage boy who kills people using the Death Note), definitely not something to miss. Oh! And I cried a lot when someone important died in the series! T-T
2) Since I am a dormer who is deprived of the glorious chaos of television and radio, I've become a totally computer dependent child. I spend more than 10 hours in front of the computer on lazy days simply because it has become my TV, radio, blog etc. Globe doesn't really make all things possible so I still use the internet to keep in touch with people hahaha. I only use my cellphone for sending text messages and receiving calls since I don't always have load. The internet's really convenient most especially when my stomach growls with hunger in the middle of the night. I either message a friend or use the online McDo service to have my food delivered. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not very lazy! It's just that the mere thought of climbing up and going down the stairs from the fifth floor makes me weak sometimes hahaha). So there, the life of an internet/computer dependent damsel. ^-^
3) Frankly, before college, one of my best boy buds told me that I will be wasting my time and abilities if I pick a course like Mass Communication. He said I'll be better off taking Medicine or Law and stuff like that. I merely shrugged off his opinion. Why? Well, I used to think that maybe I can be a good lawyer who kicks ass in court without breaking a sweat. Or a super pristine looking doctor who tinkers with tools and saves lives in a stainless steel table. But I knew I didn't have the passion for such uptight stuff. Being a lawyer requires me to memorize rules that I myself am not to keen to follow. A career in medicine takes away my time from my own hands. What I'm trying to say is, I like being free to choose what I want and do things on my own will. I'm not a complete rebel but I like adding some color to rules or bending them to a more interesting shape. Mr. Rudy Ang told us in the freshmen Open House for JGSOM that if we want the more creative stuff, we should go to Comm and here I am, one rocking Comm major set out to conquer the world.
Hi, I'm Patricia Dayacap, but almost everyone call me Pat. Patricia's just too long, don't you think? For as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in reading and writing. So when it was time to fill out the college application forms, I put AB Communication as my first choice. I knew it was the course that could help me out with what I really want
to pursue, Journalism. And now, here I am taking up Com100. :)
1. When it comes to TV shows, I have tried to watch almost all the popular shows out there, from their first to most recent season. However, I have only managed to finish two, Friends and Gossip Girl. YES, I finished all ten seasons of Friends. Haha. I love Friends because a) it makes me laugh, and b) each episode runs for less than thirty minutes. Gossip Girl is actually more than thirty minutes but I love it anyway because of two words: DAN HUMPHREY. And fine, the storyline's actually very interesting.
2. I am forever browsing the Internet and permanently glued to my cell phone. If I had an iPod, its earphones would always be stuck to my ears.
3. Thankfully, my parents gave me carte blanche when I had to choose a course. As for the others out there who think Comm isn't as serious or whatever as other courses, I really don't care what you think.
Hi! I'm Katrina Albano. Please call me Kasey (pronounced "KC").
Here's brief history of my name, if you're wondering where it from. People used to call me "Kat" back in my kindergarten days, but it slightly pissed me off 'cause I hated having the same name as an animal. My dad decided to rename me after the lead character in this vaudeville poem about baseball called "Casey at the Bat", 'cause back then I was a huge baseball fan (GO RED SOX!). Obviously, he took some liberties with the spelling. (Just a side note: Though I am a fan, I suck at baseball. I'm terrified--TERRIFIED--of round flying objects.)
Okay, I think I've just said too much. But I guess it explains why I'm here in Comm and nowhere else. XD I like to ramble (usually in written form) about random stuff. I'm also into a bunch of media-related things. So far, I've tried writing both feature and news articles, making movies (script, camera work, editing), and mixing music. Right now, I'm into graphic design, painting, photography, and making music videos in my head (which I do every time I listen to my iPod, hee hee). I chose Comm 'cause it seems to be the perfect course were I can develop my skills in those areas. :D
1.
Favorite TV show:
Hmm, this is tricky 'cause I watch a whole lot of them. I guess my favorite would have to be a toss-up between "The Office" (the US version) and "How I Met Your Mother". I'm a sucker for comedies with witty catch phrases (like "That's what she said!", "Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.", "Legen-dary", "Wait for it, wait for it ..."), strange romances, and eye candy XD
Favorite movie:
I LOVE anything and everything Stanley Kubrick makes. Kubrick is GOD. He is made of pure awesome and genius and everything kick-ass wonderful in the world. (From this point on, I will probably use the word "awesome" in every sentence.) My favorite film of his would have to be "2001: A Space Odyssey". I love it because of the awesome set design (which, amazingly, hardly looks dated despite being constructed in the late 80s), cinematography, and his chill-inducing use of silence and stillness as motifs. Not to mention that awesomely trippy sequence where Dave travels through the Star Gate. It's probably the closest anyone could ever get to experiencing hallucinogenic mushrooms XD
Favorite Book
"Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco! Miles better than "The Da Vinci Code" (which I think is waaay overrated and over-hyped -- ugh I cannot explain just how much I hate Dan Brown and his book), especially with regards to the story line, the dialogue, and the more complex conspiracy theories.
2. I think I'm an extremely heavy user. I probably spend 90% of my day on the media (the 10% being me asleep). I'm a computer, internet, iPod/music, movie, tv show (although I don't watch shows on television; I do so through the internet) and photography junkie XD If i had to separate myself from my Macbook, iPod, and/or SLR, i would most probably enter into very acute stages of insanity. Or die. D: Which I do not intend to do soon.
3. Some people in my family have a low opinion of Comm. They're eagerly waiting for me to shift into like, LM or something, 'cause apparently, they all think Comm majors end up being either broadcasters or call center agents. But screw that. Comm is where the fun is :)
Hello, sir. My name is Rochezka Bianca R. Beltran, but since I had a say in what I was to be called, I prefer being called Aika.
When people ask me why have I picked Comm as my course, my immediate response has always been "because I like to read and write". That being said, the follow up question is always if I'd like to become a writer. Three or so years ago, the answer would have been yes. But now that I have been more exposed to the different facets of communication, the answer is no. I can safely say now that I am a Communication major because I am interested in the different facets in the study and the variety it brings.
1) name a favorite tv show or movie or book and state why it makes your list.
Currently, my two favorite books are High Fidelity by Nick Hornby and Choke by Chuck Palanhiuk. I've always been a fan of Nick Hornby (I have almost all his books) because I love the dry wit and humor that appears in his books. High Fidelity stood out to me because I've read it more than once and I still never get bored while reading it. Aside from that, its protagonist is very interested in music which I can very much relate to as well.
Choke is the most recent thing that I've read, and it interested me at first because of the author (who is the also the author of Fight Club, which happens to be one of my favorite movies). His ideas show an "out of the box" thinking that just makes me read his work even more.
2) how much time do you spend on the media in a typical day? do you consider yourself a heavy, medium, light user? a fan/addict/junkie of a particular technology or program or artist? why? how?
I am probably somewhere in between a high medium and a mid-heavy user. In my idle time, I normally spend it watching television, reading books or simply surfing the Net. I wouldn't call myself a junkie of any sort, but I do believe that I am quite dependent on the Internet (with all the e-groups giving us a venue to post reminders, the instant messaging, etc.). After all, who isn't these days?
3) how do other people respond when you tell them that you're a Comm major? any memorable stories?
I had one classmate in high school who gave me this awkward look when I told her I chose Comm as my course. She said, "So, I guess you're still pretty much undecided, huh?" She had this notion that people who pick Comm normally do so because they can't decided on anything else just yet. A common misconception, but one that I believe all depends on the person. I picked Comm because that is what I am interested in.
Have a nice day, sir. :)
Hello I’m Katherine Grace Tan// call me Kate :)
Just last year I was planning to shift to BS Management. The idea of being offered an impossibly high initial salary and big-time companies begging for my fresh-grad-BS-MGT services sure was tempting, but my heart is really in Comm. The thought of having Accounting or Math 21 instead of the Comm courses was unbearable. Not that I hate Math, I just don’t love it. I've been fascinated with the media ever since i saw its effect on humanity. And that's why i decided to stay..i can't let it go, I'm in love with Comm! :)
1. Book: Jodi Picoult books! She tackles different social issues and her books really force me to have debates with myself.
Movie: I like the works of M. Night Shyamalan, and Cholo Laurel’s Nasaan Ka Man(2005) really caught my attention. Not that I look down on Philippine Cinema, but this really exceeded my expectations of a local film.
2. Medium, I guess. I love the internet (reading news/opinions/etc.) I also like analyzing advertisements. And I’m currently exploring Adobe Photoshop.
3. I get a lot of “edi ang dami mong magagandang blockmates pakilala mo naman akooo” from my guy friends! My family and friends are very supportive. They think that I should really go for it!
Hi, I am Andrea Nicole L. Puyat, or better known as Nikki.
Why did I choose Comm? When I was in first year high school, I was able to PA (production assistant, not personal assistant) for the first time for an event. Ever since then, I have been given opportunities to do the same for more events, two of which were held in Araneta Coliseum. (Actually, I'll be doing something like it this coming August during a friend's wedding.) Despite the stress, I have fallen in love with that kind of work. A good friend of mine, who graduated from Ateneo as a Comm major as well, told me about the course. I was so set on taking up AB COM in Ateneo. To add to it, I love taking pictures and editing.
After being in Ateneo for several months already, I began to doubt my compatibility with the course. First, I have the tendency to be shy and quiet. I have always been this way and it is very contradictory to what a stereotypical Comm major ought to be. I believe my personality will be a major hinderance in getting a job or performing important tasks. Second, I feel incompetent compared to many of my blockmates and other Comm majors. Three, I am not very good at writing nor do I read much. But I am comforted by the promise in Ephesians 3:20.
So I am still here. Struggling, but trusting that my love for the course will help me through.
1) Name a favorite TV show or movie or book and state why it makes your list.
TV Show: Just like most girls, I was (I can't wait for September!) hooked on One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl. Save for the hot men, I enjoy the twisted plot lines and, well, it's just interesting to watch. Right now, I am watching Greek.
Book: As stated early, I barely read. The only time I do is for required books for classes. But when I am bored (or get stuck in school doing nothing), I read this really thick book on photography or my Rebel XTI's manual. Surprisingly, I am learning a lot.
2) How much time do you spend on the media in a typical day? Do you consider yourself a heavy, medium, light user? A fan/addict/junkie of a particular technology or program or artist? Why? How?
This has been a struggle of mine for the past five or more years. I am forever glued to the computer screen. On a normal day spent at home, probably 80% of my time is spent online. At times, I do watch TV, that is if I can't find that certain show online. On my way to school and going home, I always listen to the radio. Clearly, I am a heavy user.
3) How do other people respond when you tell them that you're a Comm major? Any memorable stories?
Thankfully, no one has dissed me choosing this course, even my parents. They are both very supportive and trust my decision.
Hi1 I'm Rachelle Anne Gutierrez. You can call me Rachelle or Rache, whichever you feel more comfortable with. I chose AB Comm since I've always wanted to be a journalist. Also because I love to interact with people and expressing myself is vital to my everyday survival. XD
1) name a favorite tv show or movie or book and state why it makes your list.
I don't have a particular fave TV show since I dont appreciate TV that much. With movies, I usually appreciate them on a somewhat aesthetic level. Although I am fond of watching movies and like to discover the deep meaning beneath the story line, I still don't have favorites haha.
Books are my one true love haha. I can spend a whole day just reading some book I picked up from national or fullybooked. My particular favorite is "The Trumpet of the Swan" by E.B. White. It was the first ever book that I actually read. I hated books when I was younger, but one night my mom came home with three pocket books hoping I'd read them. Miraculously I did! The first one I read was this book, and i ended up finishing it in less than a day. I've been hooked since then. I can't live through a month without maybe getting a book or two - which Im not even sure of when I'll read it. hahaha.
Why this makes my list? Besides its sentimental value to my childhood, I guess its because the lessons it imparts to me never get old. Moreover, each time I go through it, I discover something new. A new wisdom that I seem to have missed the last time I read it. Hence, it's always new to me.
2) how much time do you spend on the media in a typical day? do you consider yourself a heavy, medium, light user? a fan/addict/junkie of a particular technology or program or artist? why? how?
On media...hm...with TV, less than a minute everyday. Radio, most of my afternoon and a bit of my mornings. With publications, quite some time. With the internet...forever? haha. I'd consider myself addicted somewhat to the internet. It's a great source for practically anything. So i find it very helpful, although not usually necessary.
I have lots of friends who have gone abroad so I find the internet a great advantage to keep in touch with loved ones (relatives and friends). So you'd probably catch me on YM, always available. Never too busy to talk to anyone. Not even during finals or a big paper! haha
3) how do other people respond when you tell them that you're a Comm major? any memorable stories?
Around two minutes of silence, staring at me, with their eyebrows reaching towards each other. That's usually the physical manifestation of a person's wonder of why on earth I took Comm.
So far, I have met very few people who haven't given a reaction that screams "What were you thinking?!" upon saying that I'm a Comm major. All stories are the same for me. Except maybe that one day in our province when my parents had a visitor. While they were discussing their lives and of course the children, my mom mentioned I was in Ateneo. So there goes the praise and wows. Next, she says I'm a Comm major. (btw I just happened to be near them that time so I couldn't help but hear. haha). When she said that, it was as if a bomb exploded. Comments of why and why not this course and that came rushing in. It was worse than the regular reaction of people because the guest actually had the guts to give criticisms about my course. Unlike most people who would stop at why, he actually went on saying "Why not this course?" and "Sayang naman yung brains niya". I guess the implication that all Comm majors were stupid was what made that moment unbearable and memorable.
However, there have been some people who have realized how vital Comm Majors are to society, so I guess that somehow balances things out a bit.
I'm Jose Pascual Arnaldo. Jopy for short. To be perfectly honest, I'm not a Comm Major... Yet. I'm technically an English-Lit Major, but I switched out all of my lit subjects this sem for Comm subjects so that when I do get to shift, I won't be behind. Of course, thanks to that, if I bomb my QPI I'm totally 'effed beyond imagination. But enough about that. I chose Lit at first because I wanted to be a writer. I just didn't know what kind. Then over the course of freshman year, thanks to some friends, my org and alcohol, I realized I wanted to be a screenwriter, comic book writer, and make shorts and features. And hence the Comm-ness.
1.) Favorite TV Show: I've got a lot, but at the moment, the one that jumps at me the most right now is How I met your Mother. Aside from being totally witty and funny, it's Awesome. Barney, in my opinion the show's stand out character, is just... all kinds of jumpy fun. Think of HIMYM as the new FRIENDS of sorts. Less innuedo-y, more of the direct sexual comments.
I'd answer fave film, but there's too much jumping around and popping up in my head at the moment. I'd have to name it by genre/type of film to properly satisfy myself so... yeah. Too long.
Favorite Book: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. A book about two Jews during WWII in New York making superhero comics. Its a really frikkin' awesome book.
2.) I'm an internet kid. Hell, I've replaced TV with my computer since I mostly stream or download whatever shows or films that catch my eye. Old, new, whatever. I see it, I grab it. If I'm not out doing shit, I'm on my computer and on the internet.
3.) None... Yet. I predict maybe a "Congrats" here and there though.
Hi, my name is Toni Ysabelle Chan. I like my name very much, but i like my nickname Tonibelle better. Last time I checked, only around seven different Tonibelles would appear on Google search results and there is only one other Toni Ysabelle in the world, and coincidentally she's in the Philippines, too. But she has 'Maria' before the Toni Ysabelle; I saw her signature on a petition site. Anyway, it doesn't matter. Those people who share my name aren't famous anyway. I'd only care if they were, because I have dreamed for the longest time to be "The Tonibelle", or maybe, "Tonibelle the Great". Haha. I have dreams that are rather too big for my physical size, I know. But what the hell, I'd rather be small and cute than be tall (or BIG) and, well, I don't know... a bitch? Then again, I am somewhat a bitch now. I'm sorry for the words, Sir. But I realize I talk best when I am unrestrained. I guess all people are like that, though my self-absorption would absolutely love to believe it's another unique, special thing about me. But I'm not that stupid, so I know it's not. Haha. And, oh, please, please don't get the wrong idea. I know I sound like I'm such a boastful, self-centered diva, but I'm a really nice person and I can be quite caring. I just like being sincere and direct, sometimes even brutally so. So now, in this introduction, I'm being sincere and direct in revealing my thought processes (wow naman, psych) and my (used-to-be-secret) dreams for the future. So, yeah, I want to be famous, and I think I'll have the capacity to be if I work hard enough and if I have people believing in me. Awwwwwwww. Anyway, I chose AB Communication because I shared the majority's generalized, and wrong, idea that all Communication students are like me: loud, blatant, likes the spotlight, etc. Now I'm not sure if I chose the right course, but I guess there's no turning back because only a sudden increase in demand (and salary) for Filipino theater actors can convince me to shift. I made my decision to take Com and I'm not backing out now. I'll make the best of what I can get. Of course, I am so not demeaning this course. I super admire the greatness of communication studies, especially now that we've started lecture on Com101. It's just that I'm not very immersed in the media, and I fear that's going to be a huge, as in huge, problem. I don't watch TV (Like, who's that Robbie person? Is that even how his name is spelled?). I have stopped reading books (because En12 and En101 took up a horribly big chunk of my free time last year). My Internet 'surfing' is limited to Multiply, Yahoo! and the Peanuts website. How, then, will I make it big in Com? And people, who stereotype Com majors, expect I'm perfect for it! When I tell people I'm in Com, they don't tell me the usual, "Shit, bakit hindi ka nag-Management-Honors or some other boring (this is subjective. no offense to management people) course that will earn you a shitload of instant money?" They tell me, "Omg, Tonibelle, you are so perfect for Com! Greet me the first time you appear on TV ah!" or "Com? So, journalism? Okay yun, bagay... pero baka ma-kidnap ka at mapugutan ng ulo." or "'Di ka makikita sa camera, ang liit mo eh. Haha, joke lang, magaling ka naman." See, these people are expecting that I'll be good! And they think I'm going to take journalism just because I'm decent at writing. But my knowledge about the world beyond my phonebook and Yahoo! Messenger list is, to quote a text message Bianca showed me, like Coke... it's ZERO. So, again, I ask the ultimate question: With the level of awareneness I currently possess, how am I going to make it big in Com, meet these expectations, fulfill my dreams to be famous, make lots of money quickly, so I can have an extravagant wedding when I'm twenty-six? (Yeah, well, I want to be happily married before I'm thirty, so I can have two kids before I'm forty and I won't have such a hard time when I'm older. Haha.)
But that is something I choose not to worry about until I absolutely need to (a.k.a. next semester). For now, I am set on just learning as much as possible from my classes and relishing the good things in life, like being in love... Hahahaha. But I am, seriously. I've started playing Moulin Rouge soundtrack in loop because I can relate to the love parts. Moulin Rouge is my favorite movie, or at least I think it is. I'm not sure if it's actually a 'favorite'; I just know that when I think of Moulin Rouge, something tugs faintly at my little heart. I feel that tugging sensation, too, when I think about the Twilight series, but I think it's more of because I find Edward extremely desirable than because they're my favorite books. I still think the Harry Potter series and the Chronicles of Narnia are better. And Sherlock Holmes is the best. There are other books I like, but I can't remember them all now because I'm sleepy and all I can think about is my favorite pillow, which I left at my dorm.
Good night and see you all on Tuesday. :)
Hello good sir!
You can call me Jech, instead of my name in your class list. I honestly think that I am a very cooperative student but I have a huge problem with staying awake during morning classes. Therefore, I'm saying sorry in advance haha! And it doesn't help that we have the benefit of air-con because it makes it all the more cozy.
Anyway, I took up Com because I like media related things. I also like to write but at the same time, I have no control over my laziness. haha! And I'm also thinking of studying law after I graduate and I'm hoping that this course will help me develop my skills in expressing my opinions.
1.) a. Favorite tv show: (Aside from basketball) One tree hill, the O.C. - I like watching stuff like this.
b. Favorite book: A walk to remember, the notebook - I'm a sucker for stuff like this haha!
c. Favorite movie: I WANT TO BE IRONMAN.
2.) I consider myself a heavy media user. Aside from watching television a lot, I also spend lots of hours using the internet.
3.) Whenever I tell other people my course, they only have one response - "i love you, go to bed with me. now na!" HAHA! COM IS GOD! (joke lang sir)
Okay. Done!
Hi everyone! My name is Pat Ocampo. I'm a junior and am double majoring psych and comm (YIKES), and will be finishing within the span of five years.
I chose to apply for communications because i sincerely believe in the compelling power of media and feel that it is one of the best ways i can make what i learn in psychology practical and useful to society :D
1. my favorites change all the time, but my current obsession is English monarchy. Hahaha, i devour anything i can get my hands on about it. (sir, you are living my dream!! haha)
2. with regards to how much i use media, i'd like to think i can describe myself as "medium" in term s of how much i use it. My computer is on most of the day but i only use it for work purposes during the week. My weekends are dedicated to extra curricular activities + books, movies and going out at night if possible. :D
3. I've received condescending responses from people but choose not to let them get to me. I believe that to be successful in the field of comm takes a lot of talent, so common opinion should not be taken seriously.
i'm looking forward to learning with and getting to know you all!
:D
yay!!
thanks :D
Thanks to those who have posted so far. For all future posters, kindly indicate at the end of your post your full name.
Keep the conversation going!
Hi, I'm Chrissie Capalaran Bumactao. I don't have a nickname so you can just call me Chrissie. I try to be a good student but sometimes the information just doesnt register! haha but i'm sure you're discussions are interesting sir! :) Anyways, I chose AB Com because I love to talk and discuss ideas and listen to other's ideas as well. I thrive off of the energy of people around me and I think I am pretty in touch with my emotions. To be a good communicator, to me, means being able to understand your audience and know how they will react. I want to get better at these things as the years go on. But I'm sure yet whether I want to go further into advertising for journalism.
1. fav t.v. show would be mostly anything on the discovery channel and sometimes there are really interesting things on animal planet (i sound like such a dork lol). but other than that i really like House M.D. or ANTM. actually, anything with tyra banks. My fav book would probably be Dreamland. I read it when I was like 13 or something but I just remember it was the first book that made me cry.
2. I would say I'm a heavy user. But it depends on the time of year and if there's anything else to do. When I'm bored I can watch T.V. for hours. But I DO go online to see perezhilton.com almost everyday! celebrity gossip is so addictive. that and facebook.
3. People just usually nod and say "communications?" and then make some sound like a grunt of acknowledgement or something.
Hi, I'm Pamela Aimee L. Rigor. Please call me Aimee because I absolutely don't like it when people call me Pamela. Well, my classmates probably don't know me because I'm not from their block. I'm actually a transferee from UP. My course there is Journalism and I transferred to the Ateneo to study Communication. That might seem weird but I did it because I actually want to be in the Ad and PR track instead of Journ. I chose AB Com because I want to be in dynamic and exciting work environments (field of media--everything media is exciting for me) when I graduate.
1. Favorite TV Show: I don't like watching TV that much, but when I do watch TV, the channel's always ETC. I also like watching The Big Bang Theory and Friends... on DVD.
2. During semestral breaks and summer vacations... I'm a HEAVY user. I seriously live in front of my laptop, playing games, reading articles etc. I live for the gym when I go out and I live for internet at home. LOL. Now that school has already started, I don't even use the internet. I only go online now to do homework and other school related stuff. Commenting on this blog is a perfect example :)
3. I find it weird that people here in the Ateneo have a stereotype of Com majors. They say that Com majors are all goodlooking. Not that I complain about it or there's anything wrong with that XD Of course they have to realize that we're not just pretty faces (HAHAHAHA UM IGNORE THIS) and we're not all just blah blah blah; we're studying Com to be the future people of different media institutions. I know we will all work hard in the future to improve/change the media practices (more competent and professional, I hope) in this country.
Hi sir! I'm Anna Lou Lagman. You can call me Anna Lou. A lot of people have derived nicknames from Anna Lou as well, so it's up to you if you find it too long :P So... why i picked com... I like movies. And video games. And working behind the scenes of any one those would be one of the best jobs ever. I remember in high school where we had to make videos or even plays, I would usually work behind the camera and found out i actually loved it there. From directing, to fight choreography, to making a soundtrack (all in one play), I realized that comm would be the best place if I want to use these skills.
As a side note, I usually type in small caps, so you can imagine how many times I had to go back and correct my I's. :P
1)
tv show: Blood+. I've loved this show since my last few years of high school. It's got everything I love: swords, kick-ass female leads, hot characters, a great plot, a love story, and of course, it made me cry. Let's put it this way: I love it so much that i cosplayed as the female lead. Complete with accessories and especially, the sword
movies: too many to name, but The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings top my list. For both, I love their elements of action, romance, and basically how their stories were unfolded. I will always like the books of LOTR better than the movies, but the Matrix... let's just say I have posters of all three movies in my room (plus a Kill Bill Vol. 2 one)
2) I use the media pretty often. There isn't a day where I don't use the internet. Music usually accompanies me with that. And I try to watch movies every weekend. Phone? Yup. I've only forgotten my cellphone once. Or twice.
I'm a fan of many things. Just too many to name. From photographers, to cosplayers, to directors, to composers, my lists of favorites can go on without me ever being satisfied with it.
3) This is probably the best one. I think I get the most unusual responses when people find out that I'm a comm major. Their faces usually look like this: O_O or ?_?. It's one of the more "shocking" parts when I get introduced. I think it's because they see that I'm mahinhin, but I guess the tough part is explaining how I like working behind the scenes. For the most part, I just let them be surprised :P
~Anna Lou Lagman
Helloooo! :) I am Bea Isabel Oliveros. You can call me Bea. A3 knows me as their addicted-to-stars-and-anything-yellow blockmate. Yay! :) I chose AB Com because I’ve always been interested in films. I love watching films, and someday, I hope to make one, myself. :) However, I am not totally decided on taking the Production track since Advertising fascinates me as well. :)
1. As I said earlier, I’ve always loved films so picking a favorite would be hard. :D I watch A LOT of TV shows but my current favorite is Greek, I love this show because I find the characters’ fraternity/sorority lives interesting :D I am not much of a reader but I love Camila Morton’s “How to Walk in High Heels: The Girl’s Guide to Everything.” It’s not really a guide for EVERYTHING, and it’s not that a girl can’t live without reading it. But I find it interesting that the book explains how to do things (like dancing and grilling food) “the girl way” :D
2. On the average day, I spend around 6 hours on the internet surfing, watching videos and multiply-hopping and 2 hours watching television, so I guess this makes me a heavy user. :)
3. I am really glad that my family and friends all support my decision to be a Comm Major!
Yay! :D
-Bea Isabel Oliveros :)
Hi there, Sir! My name is Jesse Emmanuel F. Rosario. Please call me Jem, by the way. Thank you very much! :D
I chose AB Comm because I wanted to fulfill my all-time dream of being in front of the camera, in fighting attire, delivering the news straight as it happens. It may not seem like it, but I am actually a reserved and easily-apprehensive person; so it seems somehow weird why I chose a job that requires quick decisions and audacity.
Honestly, the decision for Comm is a pretty complicated one. Aside from being a broadcast-journalist, I (still) dream of being a Ph.D. graduate from some elite University and teach there. But seeing how teaching can pay so much in the Philippines, I was discouraged by my parents from doing so. They say it's better to be practical than idealistic, and that if I really want to be Professor JemR, Ph.D., I could do so on a later time (at my own expense, drat...).
I could go on and on, but I'll keep it at that for the meantime.
Favorite TV Show: I really like watching NBC Nightly News and TV Patrol World. I also watch CNN whenever possible (because I grew up without cable service, so I'm more into local TV). But of course, I also watch other things like those feature stuff about Japan, Tomorrow Today, Desperate Housewives, House, and last but not the least, the Dr. Phil Show .
Other than that, I am 'ruled over' by Japanese anime.
Favorite Book: Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World !!! This was actually a Christmas gift to me by my former Inquiry Editor in The GUIDON, Ryan Chua, because "nahihilig ka na sa philo..." When I evaluated my bookshelf, the titles that reached my list were the ones that weren't always easy to read like Dr. Madeline Levine's The Price of Privilege , a psychological study on rich kids in the States, and Malcolm Gladwell's The Tipping Point , key takes on social psychology.
Movie? I haven't really watched it, but thanks to the PlayStation2 release, I'm getting free clips of it as bonus items (especially when I have interesting gaming moments): it's Mario Puzo's The Godfather .
Media Habits: I am a fair user of media. Not too much, but not too little. Although there will be times when I will be 'glued' to the Internet, these will be times when I want to read the Philippine Daily Inquirer and its Youngblood entries, and so. Otherwise, I spend my free time watching (and re-watching) my anime DVDs.
Comm experience: Oh my, this is the real thing. The history of my choice. Makes me look so old. Haha.
Anyway, it's like this. First, I was bent on becoming a teacher. But then I entered into fierce resistance from my parents. When the journalist Mon Ilagan won the mayoralty race and ended a 58-year old political dynasty, that was when I decided to become a journalist somehow, someday (I just don't know about the politics part, hehe).
But, just the same, I was also met with resistance. My mother was actually thinking that Ateneo's AB Comm is multidisciplinary, just like DLSU's AB Communication Arts. She was actually banking on me becoming an advertising executive (McCann, Saatchi and Saatchi, and all that); so you can just imagine her ickiness at my stance to be a journalist. It's amusing, actually. We look like a rat pack when we discuss it at home; occassionally getting cat fights because of it. But she's my mom and I know that she cares for me... more than I could ever imagine.
Lately though, with the abduction of Ces Drilon and her cameraman by the Abu Sayyaf Group, my father is getting concerned over my future welfare. It's so cute! Oh well, I say that only happens in the Philippines; it doesn't really happen (I think) in the States than it does Africa or so.
Oh by the way, Mayor Mon prophesied to me and my mother that I will be the next Noli De Castro. How's that for a prophecy?
I think that's scary. But exciting as well! :D

Hello, sir! I'm Jellie Anne Maldia Ramos. You can call me by my first name. To be honest, I'm not quite sure if comm is the most fitting course for me. I really dread public speaking unless it's simply reciting a speech I've already mastered which, unfortunately, is seldom the case. It's really my sister-in-law who inspired me to take up comm seeing how graduating with a degree in mass communication has opened so many doors for her. I'm not saying that I regret my decision. In fact, I'm learning to love my course as time passes. Even if I'm not as eloquent as most comm majors, it's not reason enough for me to quit and the more I become determined to learn.
1)I really enjoy watching psychological thriller movies like Secret Window and Wicker Park. I like how the plot makes the viewers think and wonder together with the protagonist and not just be a passive audience. I especially enjoy the surprise factor at the end when the mystery's resolved and everything finally falls into place. I also like A Walk to Remember. I cry every time I watch it. Favorite t.v. shows: the O.C., One Tree Hill and Grey's Anatomy. I just can't get enough of the drama. And PRISON BREAK! It's the most exciting show on earth. Next is Alias. Favorite Book: Harry Potter! J.K. Rowling never fails to amuse me.
2) I think I'm a medium user of media. I spend almost all my spare time watching t.v./movies.
3)I remember being asked, "Are you planning on entering show business?" Haha! Comm majors are stereotyped that way. It's either that or we're too lazy or stupid to study math.
-Jellie Anne Maldia Ramos:)
Hi, I'm Katrina Pecson. Call me KitKat. I'm in AB Communication because I love art and public speaking. I especially love working with watercolours or Photoshop. I plan to take the ad and pr track, because I'm pairing it with my second major in BS Management which has marketing classes.
1) One of my favourite books is Memoirs of a Geisha because it is a beautifully-written and poignant account of a poorly-understood time in history. The details and trivia in the story made the book even more interesting.
2) I'm definitely not clueless about the internet and Photoshop is my baby! I make digital paintings and photomanipulations. Perhaps I could also be the MS Word Goddess.
3) I've no memorable stories related to discussing my course with other people, although SOM people have assumed I'm in ComTech Management.
:)
Hi, my name is Andrew Ilagan. And you can call me Andrew.
I am in fourth year now (I feel old in this class, ha-ha). I'm actually an irregular Comm major; hence my subjects are all jumbled up. I used to be a Fine Arts student, but then I shifted to AB COM late into the game since I wanted to have more focus in my field of interest - advertising and public relations. This has been one of my best decisions yet.
Favorite Book: Ray Bradbury's "Dandelion Wine" is, hands down, my all-time favorite. I first plowed through the book when I was in sophomore high school, and rereading it never gets old for me. Bradbury’s prose is just a pleasure in itself.
Favorite Movie: Among the many films I’ve seen, “Citizen Kane” simply takes the cake away. The film’s timeless power, I think, lies in its camerawork and script.
Favorite TV show: “The Amazing Race” offers endless excitement, not to mention tours to exotic locations. I’ve watched eight out of the twelve seasons it has so far aired.
Yes, media has always been part of my everyday existence. When I wake up, my cellphone is the first thing I check. I then plug in my earphones for some upbeat music in order to wake up, just to start the day right. When I eat breakfast, the TV plays in the background. I again listen to my iPod on the way to school.
And that’s just on mornings.
How do other people respond when they learn that I’m a Comm major? People’s reactions usually vary from delight (“Wow, that’s a fun course!”) to bewilderment (“Ah, so anong magiging trabaho mo n’yan? Artista?”). Nothing memorable so far, though, but some people expect me to be chatty since I'm a Comm major. Then again, I guess I'm just more reserved than most. :)
I am Michael Harvey P. Dee. You can call me Mike or M. I am very active student who always makes the most out of things. I try to make things a little bit easier and more fun. I am fond of sports but I also make it a point to have good grades. I chose AB Com because I have been exposed to different kinds of people, and somehow I know how to interact with them. My uncle is a councilor in our city and my grandfather is the adviser of the mayor. I am usually the one who handles the campaign and the designs of the tarp. That is one reason I chose AB Com. Another reason is that I like photography so much and I think I can incorporate it in Com. Lastly, another uncle of mine, an alumnus of the Ateneo, is currently working for an Art firm in New York and somehow I'm trying to follow his footsteps.
1) Favorite tv show: just like EJ, I like The Amazing Race. I really love traveling and capturing those moments in photographs. I especially like the sunsets on certain cities because in some bizarre way, I can't seem to find a good place to shoot a good sunset scene here in Manila.
2) On a typical day, I spend around 6-8 hours on media. I am usually hanging in front of the computer or watching TV. I think I am a medium user of media. I am very particular with technology, and I always want to have the good stuff. I want a good laptop, camera and ipod.
3) When I tell people that I am a Com Major, they always ask me, "communication arts? o Mass Com?" And I always respond with "AB Com" because I really don't know the difference. Another is that they are not surprised with what my course is because I usually initiate conversations and I continually talk until nothing more pops up into my mind.

Hello hello! My name is Melody Robato but everyone calls me Melo (I use this name so often that people actually have to guess what my real name is :D) The reason I chose AB COM was because my dad said that it was perfect for me. At first I really didn't know if AB COM was the right course for me but then I found out that it was
1) name a favorite tv show or movie or book and state why it makes your list.
- Favorite TV show: I don’t watch TV often but whenever I do, I always look forward to catching Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. The reason why I love this show is because of all the food. It’s really interesting to watch all kind of foods be featured in just one show; not just ordinary food or find dining material: but regular local food. Be it gator nuggets from new Orleans to jambalaya from gulla island, it’s featured! Really great to watch :D (yes I am a fan of food.)
- Favorite Book: Kafka on the Shore! HARUKI MURAKAMI IS A GENIUS. I love the way he writes stories. The way the story flows in that book is just so natural. Even if there are graphic scenes it’s like everything is just so natural from having intercourse with one’s mother to sushi falling from the sky. Such an imaginative work of art.
2) how much time do you spend on the media in a typical day? do you consider yourself a heavy, medium, light user? a fan/addict/junkie of a particular technology or program or artist? why? how?
- If you include the cell phone (which I know is included sadly) from the moment I wake up until I sleep. Practically the whole day. I spend around 5-6 hours on the computer though I am not fond of watching TV. Personally I think I’m just a medium user of media but yes I am a texting addict during the weekends and on days when I have nothing to do. I am also an internet junkie. The reason for both of these is very simple; I like to talk. But since I have a 5 minute telephone limit, I compensate through texting and chat. For the cell phone you can tell I am an addict since I have memorized the keys and can text while doing something else. The internet is like a drug to me, the moment you take it away from me I get all jumpy and iffy-ish.
3) how do other people respond when you tell them that you're a Comm major? any memorable stories?
- “I bet you’re the only one of your kind there (in regards to race)”
- “So you’re gonna replace Mel Tiangco(?)?”
- “See to it that you shift ASAP”
- ok recent story: my grandpa HATES the fact that i'm in com so he took advantage of the fact that i had to live with him for a week. how? he MADE ME STUDY ACCOUNTING and threatened me that if i don't shift he's going to disown me. O_O super weird.
~Melody Y. Robato
Hi sir! I’m Bianca Paulyn Arcega. Call me Bianca or Biancx. ;D I chose to be a Com major because I believe in the power of media. It greatly affects and influences people from all walks of life and through it, I hope to make a difference. I'm not sure yet how or when, I just know I can. Someday. ;D
1) Fave movie: I like the movie The Phantom of the Opera because I think it has brilliant, perfectly orchestrated music not to mention exceptional songs like “All I Ask of You” and “Music of the Night”. I am fascinated with how the story reveals the dark terror that lies beneath love. hehe. Also, I admit that the film still makes me cry even after five or more times of careful viewing. Oh yes, I have a soft spot somewhere. Haha.
Fave book: I don’t like to read much actually. The first book I bought which was solely intended for pleasure (I only buy books bec. they are required in school), was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, thinking that it could get me to appreciate books more. Sadly, it did not. J.K. Rowling, you may have made a billion quadrillion gazillion dollars, but you just didn’t get me. Oh well.
Thank God, I had amazing lit classes in the Ateneo. I do enjoy reading now and I’m planning to get a hold of so many books soon. Haha.
2) I consider myself a heavy user. I go online for hours and I feel really bothered without my mobile phone. It's the first thing I check when I wake up and the last thing I lay my hands on before eventually coming to peaceful slumber.
3) My grandmother would say, “Walang pera diyan.” everytime I talk about my course. She thinks that taking Physical Therapy and such are better courses because, according to her, they’re “easy money” daw. But I don’t really care. I would always answer, “Lola, dito po ako masaya." Money for me, is just sort of like a “bonus” for doing something I really enjoy and love.
;D
P.S.
Sir, how do I become like you? I am simply dumbfounded by your achievements. WOW :D
I wish God would allow me to have even just the slightest bit of your skills. haha.
Honored to be your student. :D
--Bianca Arcega
Okay, first of all, I would like to apologize for this incredibly late reply. This completely slipped my mind (or maybe I just never really knew about it. haha). Anyway, I am Jose Antonio R. Magno, Anton for short. Honestly, the reason why I chose to take AB Communication was because my brothers told me to. HAHA. I was originally planning on taking BFA ID but then my brothers told me about how flexible Com could be in terms of media. Apparently, after a year in school, I can see that it really is very flexible. I thank my brothers for making me take this course. hehe.
1) Until today, my favorite movie is Pulp Fiction (directed by Quentin Tarantino). This movie is one of the most amazing movies ever created, that's it. HAHA. it is just so different and the way it was done was just awesome! (a must see to those who havent seen it.)
2) During the summer, on the days that I would not leave the house, the first thing i would do is turn on the computer and start using the internet. I would only take breaks for lunch, dinner or to use the bathroom. After dinner, I would still be on the computer until around 3:30 in the morning. If I would be bored by the internet, I would then go out to watch television. So pretty much my whole daily routine revolves around media and i am obviously a heavy user of media. (fyi, I love internet flash games. they help me stay not bored. hehe)
3) Basically they all ask "Anong gagawin mo sa buhay mo pagkatapos?" And in all honestly, I sometimes do not know how to answer them. HAHA.
I am Jayce Franco Chua. You can call me Jayce, or Franco, or Chip. I was your beadle but I messed up so I am sorry.
Anyway, I chose AB Com because many people thought it was right for me. It was a course that was traced from a lot of influences from the how people see me and and I would see myself because I was a little charismatic with a microphone back then. Anyway, I also chose this because I wanna help more people to be informed about the awareness of the world that they are living into, which is a developing modernization.
1. Favorite TV show: Any NBA games. I love to watch basketball because I love the game. Also, I once aspired myself to be a sports commentator. I usually not only watch the game and see and know what the players do, but also listen to the guy calling the game so that I will know how to play with the crowd.
2. Usually, I watch TV, well I watch TV longer than surfing on the internet. I watch all kinds of TV shows, sports, weekly drama series, soap operas. news, such.
3. People say that us, COM majors, are really active in expressing our interest to help people. Usually, people will say that it suits me because I am perky. But mostly, it is because I am active, very active. And also, many people are curious about me, as a Chinese, to choose a course other than management. But, then, when they get to know me more, they would say that I'll be fine here.
Hi Sir! I am Anna Paola Minerales, but I would rather be called Paoie.
It’s actually a long story why I ended up with this course. When I was a kid, science really amazed me. I either wanted to become a doctor, biologist, psychologist, anthropologist, or even an astronomer someday. My love for science turned into abhorrence though when I encountered Chemistry and Physics on my junior and senior year, respectively. Argh, I really hated those two subjects, and it was mainly because of my teachers who just weren’t motivating enough to be taken seriously! I, honestly, didn’t like math either, so when all those college application forms came out, I made a firm decision to pick courses that will not focus on either of those two. Since I also love singing, dancing, and a little bit of acting, I chose Theater Arts as my course in Ateneo.
After all the universities have released the results of their entrance exams, and after much deliberation, I, in the end, chose to spend my college life in Ateneo. My parents didn’t have problems with regards to my school, but I was met with opposition on my chosen major. Since I have already made up my mind to enter Ateneo, I just went for the closest course to theater arts I can think of, which is Com. At first, I felt dispirited about not getting the course I want, but it didn’t last long. I realized, later on, that Com was just the right major for me! This could give me the proper training for the job I wanted to do after college, and that is, to conceptualize and head events related to my passions, like gigs, concerts, and other similar kinds of productions. I am actually excited to take up the specialized subjects already!
1. a. Favorite Book: Well, I don’t read that much, and it’s not really my favorite, but recently I got addicted to the Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer. I have been fascinated with vampire-related stuff ever since I was twelve, so when I heard that it became such a hit in the US, and that Edward, the protagonist guy, was a super damn hot, good-looking, shiny volvo car owner, sweet, musical (in other words, perfect) vampire, I thought, “Why not read it?” (Hahaha!) The final installment of the series, Breaking Dawn, will come out on August, and I am more than ecstatic to get my hands on it! Aside from that, a movie of the first book will come out on December! I, as well as a million more fans out there, have more than enough reasons to be euphoric this year!
b. Favorite Movie: My Sassy Girl is certainly on the top of this list. It’s actually a Korean movie that became popular in the Philippines only around 2 years ago, but my club moderator had us watch it when I was still in my first year of high school. If you believe that your future wife/husband will come ala-Serendipity style, you will certainly like this one as well (It’s way better than Serendipity though, because this is a true story)! If you haven’t seen it, Sir, you would regret not watching it sooner. So please do!
c. Favorite TV show: It’s the TV program where I first saw, and loved, David Cook! :) American Idol Woohoo! :) I hope to see and hear him making more music sometime soon! I just can’t get enough of him!
2. Hmm...I think I’m a medium user; I only expose myself to around 9 hours of media everyday, the internet swallowing up the majority of it. :) I just don’t watch TV, listen to the radio, and spend time texting so much these days anymore, and I think the main reason for that is because everything can be found, and can already be done, in the computer. Isn’t this powerful piece of technology so practical? :)
3.I’m going to tell something a bit different from what the others say. Doesn’t it always happen that nurses and resident doctors hospitals always asks for your name, age, school, etc. just so they could talk to you and seem friendly while they’re checking-up on you? Well, I’ve noticed that, whenever I go to a hospital, my conversation with doctors would always go like this whenever my course was questioned:
Doctor: So what’s your school?
Me: Ateneo po.
Doctor: Oh. What course?
Me: Communication.
Doctor: *falls silent*
And that would usually be the end of conversation. The doctor won’t talk to me anymore.
I just can’t help but feel so bad whenever they do not react as soon as I tell them my course. I just hope that it is not because they think too highly of themselves now to regard COM as nothing compared to what they studied. But this just makes me more proud, and more encouraged, to do better at this and to show them what a com major really is.
